Museum of

Fiber Arts, Taichung

博物館

2016

Statement:

Fourteen years ago, the Museum of Fiber Arts was used to be an art museum where people would bring their children to this place during the vacation. However, the client wishes to transform the site into a new form of arts museum in Taichung which contains most of the information about fiber art and having the experiences of making fiber on site by creating a workshop. Also, the museum could offer some spaces to become a platform where people can exhibit their related fiber arts work, such as fashion clothing, fiber arts and textile.

The main challenges of this project were the management aspect, a limited amount of budget and a tight schedule. The project questions about how to offer a security system to easily occupy a 13000 sqm site safely and how to activate the site by bridging the sports field and museum together.

Design strategy:

1. Façade and Lobby - Covering up the museum's facade with metal plate and mesh, this would moderate the vivid colour of the original wall at the front entrance. The mesh covering up the huge window panel could filter the direct sunlight into interior space.

2. Exhibition space and Bridge -

Segmenting the huge and dramatically vertical exhibiting space by using related transparent long fiber or canvas. After the spaces are split into different sizes of zones, it could become the best place to hang a long or big piece of artwork.

The bridge connecting both the ground floor and upper floor will be covered by the hanged fabric and allow people to have interaction activities. On the side wall along the bridge will be a long information board for people to know the knowledge of the fiber.

3. Landscape - Emerging the idea of textile related patterns on the pavement and planting some related fiber plants around the site will attract people when they pass by the street or viewing on the other side of the street.
